Sincere Thanks for Your Continued Support

A lot of you have journeyed with me during the long period of chemo treatments. On Tuesday (November 7th) of the passed week, I had the final (12th) treatment. Everything went quite well; there were no serious side effects. The Oncologist told me that everything has gone well with the treatments. Within the next six weeks, I will be referred to Ottawa General Hospital for a PET Scan to determine if the cancer has been healed. I sincerely thank you for praying for me and for your continued concern for my health. Please pray for the complete healing of the cancer. I will let you know the final results. The neuropathy in my feet continues to be a problem, which deprives me of peaceful sleep at night. Again sincere thanks to all of you for your kindness and loving concern. I have you all in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all, especially the little ones.

Update from Fr. Gus

My dear Parishioners, as promised in my previous message, here is the latest on my chemo treatments. This morning (Tuesday, October 24th) I had my 11th treatment. I will have one more treatment to go and it will be on Tuesday, November 7th preceded by an appointment with my Oncologist and blood test on Friday, November 4th. I met with my Oncologist on last Friday during which she shared with me the results of the blood test and explained to how the treatment is progressing. She essentially told me that so far the treatments have successful in containing the cancer. She also told me that after the last (12th) treatment they will send me to Ottawa General Hospital for a PET Scan to determine whether the treatments have been effective. Therefore, until then I will not know if the treatments have been fully successful. In light of your constant prayers, I thank God has spared me of serious side effects of the chemo treatments excepting feelings of weakness and loss of weight. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. I will check with the Oncologist if I can drive to (or be driven to) St. Mary’s to see you all and celebrate or concelebrate one weekend Masses and say formally bye to you. I am in touch with Fr. Cosmas and I will check with him when this will be possible. He will let you know the exact date for this. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. I remember you all in my daily prayers. God bless you all, especially the little ones.

Update from Fr. Gus

Sincere Thanks

Your responses to my previous message were touching. I sincerely thank you all for your kind and caring disposition toward me. I find no adequate words to express my gratitude to you for your kindness. I had promised you in my previous message that I would keep you informed of the status of my health. In accord with that promise, here is the latest on my health: To date, I have completed 8 chemo treatments and tomorrow, that is, Tuesday, September 26th, I will have the 9th. After that I will have to go through 3 more. I met with the Oncologist on Friday, September 22nd, and she told me that the treatments are going well, therefore we will go ahead with the remaining treatments. The final treatment will probably be in the first week of November, with a total of 12 chemo treatments. Because of your prayers, as mentioned in my previous message, so far I have had no serious side effects of the chemo except general weakness and loss of weight. My personal physician, who is herself a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer survivor, told me that weakness and loss of weight are the normal side effects of chemo. That info is very comforting to me as I still have a few more treatments to go through. Again with the support of your prayers, I am confident that I will go through the remaining treatments without any serious problems. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. At the beginning of September, I moved into my own little Garden Home within the complex of the Retirement Residence, but with a postal code of its own. That provides me with sufficient privacy and a lot of space to concentrate on my personal projects. Now I also have definite personal telephone numbers. If you wish to write to or call me, please take note of the following details:

Fr. Augustine Mendonça

GANANOQUE, ON K7G 0A4

Phone: 1+613-463-9443 (home); 1+613-451-2061 (cell)

Please continue to keep me in your prayers. You all are in mine. Lots of love to you all, especially to all the little ones. God bless you all.

Sincere Thanks

It was nearly a month ago that I expressed in St. Mary’s Parish bulletin my informal farewell message, which also appeared on Facebook. So many of you responded to that message and expressed your gratitude for my ministry in the parish and your sadness in knowing that I had in fact left the parish for good. Your kindness and love was obvious in those messages. Reading each one of them brought a lot of tears to my eyes! I sincerely thank you for your kindness. Right now, because of treatments, I am not able to travel long distances. So far I have completed five treatments and the sixth one is scheduled for Tuesday, August 15th. After that there may be another six or seven more treatments to go. Please continue to keep me in your prayers. I am truly grateful to each one of you for expressing on Facebook your feelings of appreciation of my ministry at St. Mary’s. Unfortunately I am not on Facebook. I certainly miss you, but I will always keep you and the little ones in my heart and in my prayers. Some day, after I have completed my treatments and am able to travel, I will come by to say my formal farewell to you. I leave the details of this in the hands of the new Pastor and the new Parish Council. I am sure you all will be notified of this in time. Again thanks and God bless. Love you all.

Welcome to St. Mary’s, Fr. Cosmas Ajawara

St Mary, the patroness of our diocese, was renowned for her humanity. We remain inspired by how she invited people in and cared for them and how she encouraged all to honour the beautiful presence of Christ among us. I would like to assure you, Father Cosmas, that, likewise, we will do all we can to welcome you into our community of faith, recognising the great responsibility that has been entrusted to you.

Father Cosmas brings with him many years of pastoral experience, most recently as pastor for both St. Mary’s of the Presentation Parish and The Mission of St. Daniel the Martyr in South Mountain. We trust that you will find Carleton Place and St. Mary’s Parish to be a welcoming, new home.

We would also like to express our thanks to the Kingston Diocese and to Father Gus, forproviding a smooth transition between pastors.

We welcome you, Father Cosmas, with open arms, on-going prayers and a poem:

Our God has sent you to this place

To lead us in the way

That He would have us work and think

And live from day to day.

No matter the hour; whatever the need,

We know you will go the extra mile –

Always ready and willing to share

A comforting thought and a smile.

We’re grateful that you’re here with us

To teach us from His word,

And we will try to do our best

In service of our Lord.

We thank you for your ministry,

Your guidance and your care.

His greatest blessings for your life

Is our most humble prayer.

Goodby Message to the Parishioners from Fr. Gus

Goodbye Message to the Parishioners from Fr. Gus

My dear Parishioners,

I sincerely apologize for leaving you so suddenly without telling each one of you my final good-bye. As you all know, the last few months have been rather traumatic for me. The diagnosis of cancer was unexpected. I suppose, because of the nature of the cancer, they had to make an immediate decision on treatment plans. I was given only a few days before the chemo treatment began. Similarly, the transfer of the treatment to Kingston General Hospital also was quite unexpected. Given my condition, I had to make a quick decision about my move to Gananoque, my ultimate retirement place. By now I have had two treatments in Ottawa General Hospital and the third one is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday, July 4) in Kingston. The treatments will continue until the end of November. Please keep me in your prayers. I thank you all for your love. You have been so generous and kind to me all these years. I really miss you, especially the children. I do not have to worry about your pastoral care, because Fr. Cosmas is a very kind and compassionate Pastor. You will be in good hands. Bye to everyone, especially the little ones. You all will be in my heart always. Love you all and may God bless you. Father Gus
